Dust masks and cartridge-type respirators are designed only to prevent solid airborne substances (e.g. dust)
from entering the airways. They are not effective against chemical vapours. They are not suitable for use in
the presence of liquid aerosols, gas, toxic fumes or solvents used for spray painting. Please note that dust
masks do not give such protection.
Suitable respirators
shall
be selected in function of the respiratory hazards involved, (eg.
Sperian
Masks for
painting in confined space).
Use of a respirator together with safety glasses is recommended.
Dust masks are disposable and do not require any maintenance.
The use of cartridge-type masks depends on the type of protection needed. The first requirement is to
accurately define the nature of the hazardous substance (chemical properties, concentration in the air etc.)
and the nature of potential injuries (fatal, carcinogenic, and irritating for the skin/eyes).
The working conditions
should
also be determined (heat, confined space, duration of exposure, and degree
of difficulty of the task).
Various types of respirators are available including respirators with fine-particle filters, respirators with
chemical cartridges, and gas masks. Care
shall
be taken to identify the risk and select the appropriate
respiratory protection.
