Hearing protection (e.g. earmuffs or plugs)
shall
be used in machinery spaces when machines are in
operation and in all situations involving excessive noise.
Hearing protection is required when noise exposure exceeds 85 decibels and
should
be suited to the type of
task being performed, properly fitted to the ears, and used by the same person.
To be effective, hearing protection
shall
be worn throughout exposure to noise.
In areas where noise levels are very high, muffs and plugs can be worn together to give better protection.
Most earplugs are disposable and do not require maintenance. Reusable hearing protection
should
be
cleaned regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and kept in a dedicated case or
bag.
