Pest control must be a continuous task on board each vessel, aiming to fight against infestation at a

preventing stage.

Inspection and care while opening containers, installation of rat guards at quay, organized food and garbage

arrangements, cleanliness and many others are routine tasks aiming to prevent undesired animals on board

should

be applied.

If rats / mice are discovered or suspected on board, traps are certainly the most suitable method of

destruction. If poison is suggested, it is necessary to verify first the human health impact of the products

before its eventual use. Poisons that cause rapid rats/mice death are too dangerous to use in food premises.

But the most common, disturbing and hard to fight pest remain the cockroaches. Several means of

disinfection of cockroaches exist, each one with positive and negative effects. However, the product the

Company recommends is the Gel type, as it:

x

provides a very effective effect

x

allows localized “attacks”

x

is harmless to human health

x

is easy to use and to clean

The Company has listed several disinfection Gel makers. The vessel officers are therefore requested to

contact their purchaser for further information and orders.

In any case, and this against any pest, the main Company objective is to keep major solutions (fumigation)

as a last resort, which means only when the infestation in no longer controllable.

Prior any fumigation, the Master

should

inform his Operation Manager. Clear instructions shall be agreed

with the service company carrying out the fumigation regarding the process and products that will be used.

Recommendations for the use of pesticides on board are available in the IMO Circular

“MSC.1/Circ.1358

Recommendations on the safe use of pesticides in ships”,

annexed to the

SMS Section 9 – Safety

Management.

The vessel is required to hold a valid Derating certificate, issued by a competent authority upon onboard

inspection. In some areas, this certificate is replaced by the general Ship Sanitation Certificate.
