Fire Safety precautions:
x
Smoking
shall
be prohibited everywhere during the operation even inside (in case ventilation and
accommodation A/C would fail, pressuring of accommodation would no longer be assumed and
methanol gas may enter)
x
Electrical equipment
shall
be explosive proof;
x
Alcohol Resistant - Aqueous Film Forming Foam of the alcohol-resistant type (AR-AFFF) with 6%
foam proportioning (with water) equipment is advised for use on methanol fires;
x
Dry Chemical extinguishers
shall
be accessible for small fires. An adequate supply of hand held and
wheeled types
shall
be available;
x
Hydrants
shall
be strategically placed with adequate hoses – Foam guns are placed and orientated
as per classification society approval to cover the dangerous area
x
Small spills
shall
be remediated with sand, earth or other non-combustible absorbent materials, and
the area then flushed with water. Larger spills
shall
be diluted with water.

Methanol biodegrades easily in water. Methanol in high concentration in fresh water or salt water can have
short term harmful effects on aquatic life within the immediate spill area.
SMPEP/SOPEP equipment
shall
be ready for use on deck. Scuppers
shall
be closed and plugged to prevent
any methanol spillage to the sea.

The methanol transfer
shall
be prepared according to company’s standards, using G-JSA 15 (S-JSA if
developed by the vessel), Check-list and holding a tool box meeting as mentioned on section 9.
All electric power equipments in direct vicinity of the Methanol transfer station and pipings,
shall
be of an
explosion proof type (including lighting and portative UHF).
Battery replacement
shall
be done in a safe area, inside accommodation.
Suitable PPE
shall
be worn. Respiratory masks, face shield, chemical suits, certified methanol resistant
chemical proof boots and gloves, hard hat.
The Nitrogen
shall
be available on sufficient volume to provide a continuous loading /offloading of the whole
quantity of methanol. Nitrogen is either produced on board by the nitrogen generator, supplied by the FPSO
(receiver) or chemical tanker (supplier), or available in a tank loaded on main deck.
A SCBA shall be placed at the most strategic place in order to cope with emergency recovery of personnel
inside the nitrogen room. Ventilation
shall
be on in the nitrogen plant room during the methanol operation.
The SCBA
shall
be worn during transfer phases when entering the nitrogen plant room, as nitrogen exposure
may occur, unless the ventilation is kept on. An O2 detector is checking atmosphere in this room during
operations.
A stretcher and resuscitation kit
should
be placed close enough to the nitrogen plant room.
Methanol transfer pumps emergency stops shall be tested.
The list and trim of the vessel
should
be considered. A good setting allows a better flow of methanol when
offloading and will keep the pump running longer with less methanol left over in the tanks at the end.
