Messages to coast station are generally formulated RADIOMEDICAL followed by the name of the coast
station to which the message is sent. The priority of the message
should
depend on the severity of the
ailment. In extreme emergency the urgency signal (PAN PAN)
should
precede the address on the address
line (example: PAN PAN RADIOMEDICAL (
Station Name
) RADIO).

Musters, fire-fighting and lifeboat drills, and drills prescribed by national laws and regulations and by
international instruments,
shall
be conducted in a manner that minimizes the disturbance of rest periods and
does not induce fatigue.
- Drills and safety exercises are used to determine and record the training needs of individual
employees and records are maintained onboard and/or ashore.
- The vessel
M
aster
is responsible for ensuring that any onboard training requirements are completed
as required.
- Certain essential instructions associated with the SMS are defined on board each vessel. The
procedure to provide these instructions and other relevant information to joining crew is through their
familiarisation induction onboard. Individuals are trained in their designated emergency response
role.
- Such instructions and other information will be provided to seafarers in a working language
understood by them.
- A major exercise (with vessel(s), shore base, Head Office and if possible Client) is carried out at
least annually by the Ship Manager. The scope of an exercise is consistent with the size and
composition of the fleet and its operating areas.
Records of training are maintained in the following manner:
- Onboard, results of exercises and drills (training) are documented and analysed to identify lessons
learnt by the vessel crew (
BOS-FRM-03.0009 – Drill Report Form
). Drills
shall
be documented and
shall
record “lessons learned” during simulated emergency situations, thus allowing the periodical
incorporation of the “lessons learned” into the Plan. On the basis of the drill reports, the plan
shall
therefore be reviewed, evaluated and updated regularly. It is recommended to test all elements of
the Emergency & Contingency Response Plan and procedures. The scenario of these drills and
exercises will be varied to encompass different aspects of the responses required for that particular
emergency.
- Emergency drills and exercises
shall
be performed with as much realism as possible to an actual
emergency situation in order to better prepare and train personnel.
- All personnel mustered are individually responsible to ensure their presence is accounted for by the

. Any missing person at the muster point will be searched for. All personnel will
thereafter report promptly to their assigned duties according to the ship’s Muster List.
- Masters and Officers
shall
verify the suitability of procedures and instructions as applied to each drill
situation and when required,
shall
make any improvement necessary.
- The suitability and practicality of all emergency and lifesaving equipment
shall
also be assessed and
any recommendations for improvement made.
